Basel and Vitra

Basel and Vitra

This was our first trip to Switzerland, and our first destination on that trip. Architecturally interesting, and culturally on the French and German borders. Vitra's headquarters is close by in Germany, so we took a day trip. They have commissioned buildings by a number of famous architects including Gehry, Ando, and Hadid.

Geneva

A very international city, very friendly people, and on the beautiful Lac Leman.

Lac Leman and Chillon Castle

Lac Leman and Chillon Castle

A boat from Geneva took us almost the full length of the lake, past Lausanne and Montreux, to the castle at Chillon, which was a point of taxation for the road that runs along the edge of the lake. The antique paddle wheel ferries were a highlight.

Lausanne

Lausanne

A very pretty (and very steep) city on the north side of Lac Leman, we visited by train, returning by ferry. The cathedral is exceptionally beautiful, but so are the views from the top of the hill, looking down over the rooftops towards the lake.

Meride

Meride

This is one of our favorite places - we stayed there twice. It's a tiny village in the Italian part of Switzerland, less than a mile from the Italian border. The surrounding hills have some Roman remains, including a Roman road, and great views of the lakes.
